In time for spring and fall planting, Ithaca West will be coordinating Please, Please, Trees!, a group purchase of native tree seedlings (6in-1ft tall) for interested property owners. Varieties, likely 2, will rotate each season to ensure greater tree diversity. Due to the large purchase size, the seedlings will be offered at a heavily reduced rate (~$5 a piece).
Purchasers will be required to send proof of their Dig Safe NY service ticket their first year prior to delivery. Dig Safe NY is a free service that helps ensure tree roots do not interfere with underground utilities.
Increasing Property Values: Landscaping, particularly with trees, has been demonstrated to increase property values by as much as 20%. Individual mature trees generally asses for between $1,000 and $10,000.
Combating Climate Change: By absorbing and storing greenhouse gases throughout their bodies, trees are critical to helping keep our planet cool. Trees can also be used on properties to reduce heating and cooling system usage, aiding both the planet and your pocket. More info on that below.
Habitat for Wildlife: Trees are incredibly important to enhancing biodiversity. In fact, a single tree can be home to hundreds of species of insects, fungi, mosses, mammals, and plants. Our area has become artificially dominated by only a small handful of tree species, limiting the availability of food and shelter for many native animals.
Saving you money: Strategically planted trees can reduce summer cooling and winter heating costs up to 30% via summer shade and winter windbreaks.
